The Things We Do For Love

As you know, we planted a mini orchard in 2011... 23 fruit trees of all different kinds of fruit. Apple, plum, peaches, cherry.....

On Father's Day, the Lovey and I went to a fruit tasting at Andy's Orchard, my favorite stone fruit grower (until our trees begin to bear fruit. Then we will be my favorite). Because the trip was mainly for me, I gained the Lovey's favor with a bribe of cherry pie. Yes, I am not beneath a bribe to make my love happy.

Andy had some Black Tartarian cherries, one of the varieties of cherry we planted, flagged for harvest, so I picked about 2 1/2 pounds of these babies for the pie.

Boy oh boy, do these babies stain the fingers!
When we got home, I made the crust and let it sit in the fridge for a day or so. Then I pitted the cherries (a task I will only do again with a proper pitting tool), mixed in some sugar and corn starch, squeezed a little lemon juice in from the backyard tree, put some butter on the top of it all, slapped on a crust, put an egg wash on the top (one of Alice's eggs, of course) and put it in the oven.

I was pleased with the way it turned out. The Lovey thought is was great, which is all that matters. He kept on saying that he'd never had a pie that had so many cherries - a cherry explosion I believe were his words.

Not bad for my first cherry pie.
